Germany unveils draft cyber security law to protect ‘critical infrastructure’

Draft legislation that would pave the way for the introduction of tough new cyber security measures to protect ‘critical infrastructure’ in Germany has been unveiled by the country’s federal interior ministry.21 Aug 2014

The ministry said the draft IT security requirements would apply to telecommunications, energy, traffic, transport, health, water, food supply, finance and insurance companies and agencies.

Nato to adopt new cyber defence policy

Nato leaders are expected to accept that there is no distinction between cyber attack and physical attack at the organisation’s 2014 summit in Wales this week.

The endorsement of an enhanced Nato cyber defence policy is expected to be one of the main outcomes of the two-day meeting in Newport.

The update of the 2011 policy to keep pace with technology developments includes changing Nato’s mission of collective defence with respect to cyber attacks.

Europe Bombarded With Cyber Attacks from Russia

The majority of cyber attacks on northern European targets come from machines in Russia, while China is the number one source of threats aimed at the US, according to new honeypot data collected by Alert Logic.

The firm deployed low-interaction honeypots in public cloud infrastructure around the world to imitate vulnerable operating systems, leaving common ports open to attract hackers.

FBI warns healthcare firms they are targeted by hackers

The FBI has warned that healthcare industry companies are being targeted by hackers, publicizing the issue following an attack on U.S. hospital group Community Health Systems Inc that resulted in the theft of millions of patient records.

"The FBI has observed malicious actors targeting healthcare related systems, perhaps for the purpose of obtaining Protected Healthcare Information (PHI) and/or Personally Identifiable Information (PII)," the agency said in a "Flash" alert obtained by Reuters on Wednesday.
